Overview

Personalising the investment experience

This internship project explored how personalisation could increase engagement across the Interactive Investor website and app. As project lead, I guided the UX research, design, and prototyping process, working with three other interns to develop two personalised experiences: a redesigned finance dashboard and Investor Insights, a data-driven feature inspired by Spotify Wrapped for investments. The final concepts were fully prototyped by myself and presented to the executive board, including the CEO.

The Problem

How might we implement personalisation across our app and website to increase engagement with our products among existing customers?

Interactive Investor wanted to create a more personalised experience that could surface relevant products to existing customers, making it easier for them to discover and engage with what was available.

Research

Gathering insights

I reviewed existing investment platforms to understand how competitors were using personalisation and identify opportunities to improve the customer experience. The research revealed a gap for more tailored content, insights, and portfolio information.

User research

To understand whether customers wanted a more personalised experience, I helped design and distribute a Google Forms survey through Hotjar, which appeared to existing users when they signed out. This allowed us to hear directly from customers before developing a solution. We gathered 164 responses, with customers rating their current experience 3.3/5, highlighting clear opportunities for improvement.

Users want clearer investment insights

Customers need simpler ways to understand portfolio performance and progress.

Personalised content drives engagement

Users want relevant articles and insights tailored to their investments.

Managing investments should feel simpler

Customers want an easier way to manage and track their watchlists.

Ideation

From insights to ideas

Now that I understood what customers wanted from a more personalised experience, I explored different ways these needs could be brought together within a dashboard.

Wireframing

I developed three dashboard wireframes to explore different layouts, content hierarchies, and ways of presenting personalised financial information. Keeping the designs at a low fidelity allowed me to test the structure and content before investing in detailed visual design.

Dashboard wireframe varients, with layout 2 receiving the highest preference (48%).

Preference testing

I used UserZoom to preference test the three concepts with 31 users, comparing which layout and content hierarchy best met customer needs. The results helped identify the most valuable content and informed the structure of the final dashboard.

User rankings helped define the dashboard content hierarchy and prioritise the most valuable features.

Solutions

Final dashboard design

Using the preferred structure from user testing, I developed the chosen wireframe into a high-fidelity, fully interactive prototype in Figma.

The visual direction was inspired by Interactive Investor’s emerging colour palette, while existing design system components were used where appropriate. I also designed new components specifically for the dashboard to support the personalised content and interactions, ensuring they felt consistent with the wider product experience.

The final prototype brought together personalised insights, portfolio performance, and relevant content into one dashboard, prioritising the information customers identified as most valuable.

Website dashboard

Designing for mobile

I adapted the dashboard for mobile by prioritising content and introducing patterns suited to touch interactions. Carousels helped condense key information, while card grids, tabs and horizontally scrollable sections allowed users to explore content without overwhelming the screen.

Mobile dashboard

A wonderful prototype and some seriously AMAZING UI/Wireframing skills.

Investor Insights

Inspired by Spotify Wrapped, Investor Insights turns a year of investment activity into a personalised story. As one of the top-voted ideas from the research, the concept highlights portfolio milestones, performance trends, and key behaviours to make investing feel more engaging and rewarding.

Designing for different outcomes

I explored both positive and negative investment journeys, allowing the experience to adapt its tone and content depending on how a user’s portfolio performed over the year.

Happy path • Celebrating positive milestones, growth, and investment achievements.

Unhappy path • Presenting weaker performance with a more supportive and informative approach.

Measuring impact

The solutions received strong positive feedback and helped shape conversations around personalisation within Interactive Investor. The project informed future thinking around both the dashboard experience and the potential implementation of Investor Insights. This became one of my most impactful contributions during my placement.

Smashed it.
